Recent amendments to N.Y. Court Rules
1/30/2001    Effective immediately, it is a little easier to serve process on the

state's top lawyer. Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has extended
statewide a longstanding policy in New York City, where despite a
statute that requires service on an Assistant Attorney General when
the State or one of its agencies is sued, non-attorneys are
designated to receive service of process in those cases. Mr.
Spitzer's staff said that the Attorney General is waiving the personal
jurisdiction requirement statewide to make service less onerous.
For several years, that policy has been in place in New York City,
where non-attorneys can be served at the Office of the Managing
           Attorney, 120 Broadway.

A New Rule Requiring Arbitration for Most Fee Disputes, becomes effective on June 1, 2001.
